His favorite spot during the holidays was always laying under the Christmas tree! |
We had a pretty trying two months at our house. We took Sox to the ER back at the end of October because he was sneezing blood one weekend. He stayed at Purdue Small Animal Hospital in the ICU a few days and finally came home on Halloween. We got a diagnosis of Evans Syndrome which is very rare in cats. They also found he tested positive for a mycoplasma. We had a strict course of medicines he had to get every 12 hours and took him every two weeks or so for routine bloodwork to check his blood cell numbers.
A couple of weeks ago, when he was in for normal blood work, they were quite concerned about some levels and asked us to bring him back the next day for an abdominal ultrasound and additional tests. That night we found out some pretty terrible news. What they found was almost certainly cancer in more than one place. They gave us a couple of additional medicines and told us he could have anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple of months. We decided to bring him home and continue with medicines as his quality of life still seemed to be great. Last Saturday we made the extremely difficult decision to take him back in because he was not doing too well and we did not want to make him suffer because we selfishly wanted him around longer. So we said our final goodbyes to the best little cat we could have ever wished to have. Sox was such a great companion and truly came around just when each of us really needed him in our lives. We are heartbroken over the loss of our precious little guy.
We adopted him in 2011ish when I still lived in Washington with my parents. He used to live in the neighborhood but didn't have a true home during the winter months. After he spent a lot of time coming to see us and visit with us, we fell in love with him and chose to provide him with a warm place to live in the winter months. He became indoor/outdoor. We like to say that he chose us. He used to run at full speed from neighboring properties to come visit when he'd see my jeep pull in the driveway. He loved our porch swing and hanging out in my parents' flower beds and garden.
Sox and I moved to Lafayette at the end of 2013. Wyatt had never had any pet before and thought he was allergic to cats! They ended up becoming best buds! Sox absolutely LOVED Wyatt and their relationship really blossomed. And it turns out that Wyatt wasn't allergic to Sox!
Rest easy little guy. We miss you so much but are so relieved that you don't have to suffer anymore.
