On our last morning in Barcelona, it was raining so we took a taxi to La Boqueria. That market was so good. We wanted to get so much stuff but we limited ourselves. We both got fresh juices while we were there. We split some Iberico ham and cheese. We also grabbed food to take with us to eat lunch in the car on the road. We picked up some bread, a variety of olives, some cheese, fruit, and chocolates. We also purchased some olive oil, salt, and ham to take home. We departed Barcelona after the market and got on the road to San Sebastian. That night after we got settled at our hotel, we walked down to a nearby restaurant, Bully. We both got burgers. We finished out night with a Bully cup - orange juice, vanilla ice cream, and Grand Marnier. It was so good!
The next day we spent the morning exploring the beach and Old Town. It was a gorgeous morning for us to be out and about. We wandered the streets and grabbed some tapas. We also toured the Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro while we were in Old Town. That afternoon we hopped in the car and drove to Vitoria-Gastiez for a football match. Wyatt was so thrilled we got tickets to see Deportivo Alaves vs. Real Sociedad. It was so cold but so fun! We left just before the end of the game to drive ahead to our dinner reservation at Etxebarri. Everything the chef prepares has some component that has been grilled. This little restaurant was in a small town about an hour from our hotel. We had such a good meal.
The next day we checked out of the hotel in San Sebastian and took the scenic route to Burgos. We drove over to Playa de Laida and Playa de Laga. Wyatt had found the picturesque beaches in his research and they did not disappoint. They were gorgeous. After a stop for a walk on the beach, we made the quick trip to Guernica. We ate lunch at Nere Kabia, a hambergueseria in town that reminded me of an Irish pub. We wandered the streets in town a bit as it was a Sunday and outside of a strip of restaurants, it was pretty quiet. We went to see where the Guernica Tree is and we saw the trunk of "old tree." It was a gorgeous afternoon as we drove ahead from Guernica to Burgos. We arrived in Burgos and checked in to our hotel, AC Hotel Burgos. It was such a pretty hotel and room and overlooked the most unique tree lined street. After we settled in a bit, we walked over to the Plaza Mayor. We ended up eating at Norte Gastrobar. It was such a hip and trendy little place. We tried the potatas "Nortenas" which were a play on patatas bravas but had curry and a cheddar sauce. We also got the burrata with a spiced tomato chutney. They were both so delicious. We stopped near our hotel for me to get some gelato on the way back to the room.
On our last full day, we drove into Madrid. We parked the car and explored the city. We started at Jardines de Sabatini and the Palacio Real de Madrid. We began just wandering through the different neighborhoods and eventually stopped for churros at Chocolateria San Gines. Oh my gosh...so good. We explored some more and walked off our churros. We stumbled upon a cute little secluded garden, Jardin del Principe Anglona. It had the prettiest roses. We stopped for a late lunch at an Italian restaurant before making our way to the car and driving over to check in at our hotel, Hotel Totem. The hotel was gorgeously designed and I enjoyed our little balcony. We got up early the next morning and headed to the airport. We drove nearly 1,200 miles while in Spain and loved getting to experience several different areas. We would definitely both love to go back one day.
