We celebrated my Papaw's 97th birthday with a big party for family and friends last night! We've been having these parties for the last several years and he always has the best time. My mom and her siblings are truly awesome for putting this together year after year. Last night my Papaw said a few words and told a couple memorable moments from his youth. One story he told, which I had never heard before, was about going to the next town over as a student in high school to see Franklin D. Roosevelt go through town on a train. According to him, the train slowed to a lurch as it went through and FDR waved to the classmates there watching. As always, there was live entertainment from a band and delicious sweets provided by my cousin Tara. She outdid herself yet again!
I'm dreaming of those yummy sweets now and wishing I would have gotten an extra last night! Tara does such great work and she makes the best almond flavored icing!
Such a nice post about your Papaw. He's pretty remarkable for his age.
