For the last three years, my family has taken a week vacation to Charleston, South Carolina around the holidays. You may have noticed, this year we went the week right after Thanksgiving. A week after I got home, Wyatt and I moved out of our apartment. Sorry for being a little MIA. It's been a hectic few weeks to say the least.
Unfortunately, Wyatt had to work and couldn't go with us on the trip this year. I rode down to Charleston with my parents and Allison met us there the next day. We stayed in the same house on Folly Beach that we did last year. Our first night there, we went to Taco Boy for dinner since it's just a few minutes away from the house. Our first full day there, we had breakfast at the house and then ventured out to a couple of new places for us. We went to Memorial Waterfront Park in Mt. Pleasant first. It was great to get a different perspective on the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge. We went over to Sullivan's Island and had lunch at Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ next. I had the pulled pork, collard greens, and cheese grits. It was delicious! Next for the day, we drove along the Sweetgrass Corridor on US 17 to see the Winnowing Hands sculpture. We had dinner at Surf Bar (my favorite on Folly Beach) before driving to the airport to pick Allison up.
The next day we had a lazy morning followed by lunch at Fleet Landing in downtown Charleston on the waterfront. I had a great fried flounder sandwich! After lunch we walked through the City Market and did some more shopping on King Street. I had to make my annual stop in at Palm Avenue! On our way back to the car, we meandered through the streets and walked through Philadelphia Alley. We ended our day with dinner at Surf Bar (it was Allison's turn to pick).
On Tuesday, we had breakfast at the Lost Dog Cafe before a walk on the beach. Mom and I found the cutest decorate Christmas tree on the beach! I love everything about Christmas so it was great to find this gem. After our long walk on the beach and showers, we hopped in the car for a day trip to Beaufort (more on that later). We got dinner and dessert at Bert's that night when we got back to Folly Beach.
On Wednesday, we had lunch at Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island and then walked around on the beach at Isle of Palm. We found so many shells and treasures on the beach. In all my trips to the area and that beach, I don't remember every finding so many shells washed up on shore. We had fun collecting some to take home with us. We drove back to Folly via a quick stop at Sugar Bakeshop in Charleston. I had the almond cupcake and loved it. Almond cake and almond icing is by far my best and my go to at the bakery. We had Home Team BBQ (the West Ashley location this time) for dinner so Allison could try it since it was on her list of places to try too.
On Thursday, we had Minero for lunch. This is my favorite lunch in Charleston! I had a michelada and an al pastor taco! Yum! After lunch we took a long stroll in the historic district past Rainbow Row and down a few alleys. We ended up walking back up King Street and over by City Market so we could pick up some pralines! After we had our candy in tow, we drove back over to Memorial Riverfront park to see it at sunset. We finished the perfect day with a gourmet grilled cheese at Corey's Grilled Cheese. You cannot go wrong with keeping it simple - sourdough and pimento cheese.
On our last day in the Holy City, we hit the beach first. We returned to the beach Christmas tree for pictures and then headed down to the other end of the island so we could walk out the path to view the Morris Island Light. We stopped by Glazed on our way to lunch in Charleston and grabbed some doughnuts for the road trip home the next day. We had lunch at the Tattooed Moose. I had a the Moroccan gyro this time. After lunch, we drove out to the Charleston Tea Plantation. We took a tour of the plantation and learned how tea is harvested and processed. It was so interesting! If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary for the area, that is definitely a good option and very affordable. Tours were just $10 a person for adults. We ended our stay with dinner at Rita's on Folly Beach. We got up early (notice I didn't say bright - the sun wasn't up yet) and headed north! Yet another lovely time in my favorite city and area!
