Allison and I have gone up to Hobart, Indiana to the County Line Orchard the last two years (2014 and 2015) and continued this tradition this year. We had a tough time finding a weekend day that we were both available so we ended up choosing a week day to head up to the orchard. Somehow we have always wound up going on or right before September 14th (our dad's birthday!). I worked a couple hours in the morning yesterday and then we made our way up north to the Region. We decided we would have lunch at Three Floyds BrewPub in Munster first. We both ordered the hot chicken sandwich. We were a little concerned when the guy who brought our food mentioned there were two brave girls at the table but we both managed to survive, although it was quite spicy! Of course since we ended up at Three Floyds during the week, we had to pick up some Zombie Dust to go. We left with 4 cases after getting some orders from friends.
With our cargo in back, we made our way over to County Line Orchard, which is only about 30 minutes away from the brewery. We were amazed at the difference a week day makes! No crowds and no lines! The orchard is famous for their donuts, pumpkin and apple spice. We have waited in long lines in the past but yesterday we just walked right up to the order window and got our donuts! Once we finally decided what all we wanted to purchase from the store (I went with a dozen donuts, a jar of peach butter, a jar of apple butter, a package of pumpkin fudge, a cherry apple cider, and a minestrone soup mix), we paid our admission into the u-pick fields. In years past I ended just purchasing pre-picked bags as the types ready for picking were either not what I wanted or the apples were already fairly picked over. This year I was able to pick some on my own! We stopped and got a cookie for the road and I also got an apple cider slush on the way out before returning to Lafayette. We definitely learned that we need to continue to go on weekdays!
